Growing up in Delhi, one has seen news of rapes, molestations, sexual harassment grabbing the headlines almost on a daily basis in the English newspapers. I do not read any Hindi spreadsheets so would not comment. The ghastly fact is that you see this news on a daily basis. But the interesting thing is most of us in this country do not really find it as abhorrent as I or a few people do.
The chief minister of Delhi has been a woman for donkey years now; she does not find it disgusting, horrible, and shameful! I am just making an observation assuming she also reads the news about what is happening in her rule. Ideally, I would like to think she would have some control over the police machinery which laymen like you and me find threatening to say the least.
Besides, a lot of men think that women ask for rape. Now, I hold a firm conviction that no matter what a woman (I am using the word women as a proxy for all females), wears or does, she would never want to be violently abused. The very nature of a rape is that it is violent, non-consensual, very often, horrendously, committed by many men together. Even if a woman is drunk, she is in a semi/unconscious state of mind and body in which she can't give consent, which makes it a rape. This view that a victim asked for rape in any way is condemnable, shameful and representative of the vicious character of the person holding this view.
Shame on you!
Once a victim has been abused, then begins the endless victimization and harassment at the end of the society. Rather than supporting her, the hypocritical Indian accuses her of her ways, lifestyle and mocks her rather than sympathize and support her. No one wants to catch the criminal, the rapist, the beast, the heartless creature who commits that appalling act for some dubious pleasure on a helpless woman.
The rapist should be punished so severely that no other man dares to commit the offence again, in public!
Shame on us for justifying the brutality. Shame on us for blaming the victim! Shame on us for not being able to punish the rapist and set a deterrent for future.
Real men woo. They feel pain for the women who are the unfortunate victims of this heinous act. They feel helpless and ashamed for not being able to do anything. I feel bad when because of some so called men, a trust deficit is created in the hearts of so many women, for all men.
